What an Amazing Story -- We're a Top 10 Team!!!!
LAS VEGAS MUSTANGS, OFF TO A 10-1 START,
RATED #8 IN THE NATION!!!!

Las Vegas -- Back in the heat of the summer, our bleacher fans were thinking maybe this year Rob Pallin's Las Vegas Mustangs will get onto the hockey map.

And after a blazing to a 10-1 start, out-scoring ice teams 62-13, getting wins over the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs and the hard-skating Phoenix Firebirds, hockey people are starting to take notice.

In the Top 25 national ratings at Midgetaa.com, the Las Vegas Mustangs are #8 in the nation, marking the first time any Las Vegas ice team has really received national recognition.

Mustangs coach Rob Pallin told his the good news on Monday, which sent a few of our 17-and-under skaters scurrying off to home computers following the workout.

Midgetaa.com Top 25:

1. Arvada, Colorado
2. Affton, Mo. Americans
3. San Jose Jr. Sharks
4. Dorchester, Mass.
5. South Boston #1
6. Sylvania Maple Leafs
7. Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs
8. LAS VEGAS MUSTANGS
9. Beaver County, Pa. Badgers
10. Hershey, Pa. Jr. Bears

Also: 11. Lansing, Mich. Capitals; 12. Omaha Jr. Lancers; 13. South Boston #2; 14. Grosse Point, Mich. Devils; 15. Phoenix Firebirds; 16. Alaska All-Stars; 17. Ft. Collins, Col. Grizzlies; 18. AFL, Mich. Thunder; 19. Wellesley, Mass.; 20. Cambria; 21. Westchester Quakers; 22. Maine Jr. Pirates; 23. Tri-City Eagles; 24. Brewster, N.Y. Bulldogs; 25. Clinton, N.Y. Comets

It's an amazing story, considering two seasons ago the Mustangs were 4-31.

"We had 11 skaters, Paul Lowden in the net and we got four wins," said Neal Grossman, whose son Justin is a third-year center on the Mustangs roster. "It wasn't for lack of trying -- we just didn't have enough manpower on the ice."

Pallin took over the midget ice program a year ago and, from scratch, began to assemble the best skaters in the city. The team
got off to a fair start, but Pallin's discipline hockey and hours and hours of pure skating drills began to slowly turn around the program.

Center Travis Roseberry led the team in goal scoring, J.C. Caron emerged as a top winger, Spike Neely got the "all heart" award and the defense got a huge lift from a young goal-scoring defenseman named Eddie Del Grosso. T.J. Craig, Josh Shiode, Chris Anderson, Jason Allen were on the defense and in the net was Cody Fulwiler, regarded as one of the best goalies in the West.

The Mustangs won 34 games, went into the Tier II regionals at the Tri-Cities rink in the state of Washington.

Two games, two tough heart-wrenching loses and the Mustangs knew they couldn't get out of bracket play.

After the second game, Pallin remembers going into the darkened locker room.

His proud skaters, who had worked so hard all winter and had such tremendous ambitions, were crushed with the losses…

Pallin, his own heart breaking, came in, looked around and said …. "remember where you were a year ago….you came here thinking we could win this regional......I don't anyone to be upset…you gave it everything you had…..look at what we've accomplished…."

The Mustangs went out ahead, skated hard, but finished 0-3 at regionals.

That's when Pallin went to work.

"It's one thing to add skaters to a team," he said the other day, from his office. "It's another thing to add AAA level skaters. That's how you get stronger."

Word had spread about Pallin and the Mustangs to Las Vegas skaters who were rostered with out of town AAA touring teams.

Josh Jasek, 45-goal scorer with the AAA Riverside Coyotes, said he would come home and play for the Mustangs. So did Eddie Samuels, a 31-goal scorer for the Vail, Colorado, bantams. There was Steve Novotny, a rugged defenseman over at Team Las Vegas. He came on board.

Then, more good news. Justin Johnson, a premier defenseman for Shattuck St. Mary's in Minnesota, returned home as did his Shattuck teammate, goalie Paul Lowden.

The team is nearly complete now, with 10 wins in and with bigger games ahead against teams like the San Jose Jr. Sharks, Los Angeles Jr. Kings and maybe the best team of all, Arvada in Colorado.

Or, as the coach likes to say, there's no telling how far the
Mustangs can go this winter……

ICE NOTEBOOK -- After 11 games last year, the Mustangs were 7-4-1 with one of those losses, ouch, 10-0 to the Ventura Mariners….

Long-time Las Vegas skater Matt Moore, who scored 75+ goals here as a 10-year-old, is now skating for the #1 rated AA Arvada 17-and-under midget team in Colorado…He was with the AA Littleton, Col. Hawks 14-and-under bantam team last winter…

In the Santa Fe Ice Arena bleachers last weekend: Mark Olilla, former Team Las Vegas bantam ice coach, watched his former skaters in several of the Fall Classic ice games. He took lots of special time to talk to Travis Roseberry, Eddie Samuels and T.J. Craig afterwards..... Alex Redmond, Mustangs midget A skater, also came to watch the AAA Mustangs beat Phoenix, 5-1....

At Chilliwack in B.C., Micah Sanford of Las Vegas has two goals, two assists after five games for the Junior A Chiefs….

Nice weekend for the AAA San Diego Jr. Gulls midget team in the Portland Tournament: 7-1 over the Colorado Outlaws, 7-2 over the Ontario Senators, 5-2 over the Portland Hawks, 8-1 over the Colorado Outlaws followed by a 5-3 triple overtime win over Portland in the gold medal game….. Remy Bickoff netted seven goals, nine assists for the weekend….Shane Barkowski had 11 assists and Geoff Kemper five assists….

AAA MUSTANGS GO 4-0 AT FALL CLASSIC,
BEAT AAA PHOENIX FIREBIRDS, 5-1!!!!!

Las Vegas -- What a weekend. Four games, four wins and two of those over elite travel teams. Rob Pallin's AAA Las Vegas Mustangs took apart a very proud, hard-skating AAA Phoenix Firebirds team 5-1 before a large crowd Sunday at the Santa Fe Ice Arena.

That not only makes Las Vegas 10-1, but lifts the Mustangs 17-and-under ice team as one of the top teams in West -- if not the best.

Right now, the #1 team is regarded as the San Jose Jr. Sharks, followed by Arvada, Colorado, and AA Los Angeles Jr. Kings. Pallin's team is scheduled to play all three of those, taking on San Jose and L.A. in future Southwest Youth Hockey League games and against Arvada in the Silver Sticks tournament in December.

Mustangs GM Bob Roseberry made certain Las Vegas would get a crack at Arvada, three-time defending Silver Sticks regional champion and regarded as the top Tier II team in the Rockies. The Silver Sticks are scheduled beginning Dec. 6th in Denver.

Here's how the Mustangs did this weekend, at the Fall Classic with all game at the Santa Fe Ice Arena:

4-0 over the Valencia Express
2-1 over the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs
6-2 over the Ventura Mariners
5-1 over the Phoenix Firebirds

There were thrilling moments in all games, but everyone -- even the noisy Mustangs bleacher moms -- were quiet and tense when the Mustangs and the blue-shirt Phoenix Firebirds took center ice and lined up to play in the biggest game of the season.

Phoenix went right to the attack against our checking line, winning the opening faceoff and driving deep to set up and fire off some breath-taking shots against goalie Paul Lowden.

A puck slid low, right under Lowden's stick and all of a sudden it was 1-0 Phoenix.

Then the Mustangs went to work, the hard way. Las Vegas powdered Phoenix with some hard checks to disrupt the Firebirds precise high-speed flow in the attacking lanes.

At the same time, Pallin was using a black magic marker and scribbling Xs and Os on the rink glass behind the Mustangs bench.

Las Vegas struck next, with a play right out of the stat book.

Early Saturday evening Pallin asked to see shot and faceoff charts of the three previous games and the coach was told that Sean Darby had won every faceoff in the tournament.

"Not only that, but Sean is winning faceoffs cleanly – the puck going straight back to the defense," Pallin was told.

So, just over six minutes to play in the second period, the Mustangs lined up at the right blue circle in the attacking zone. Darby skated slowly to the faceoff area while Grossman took a slow reverse path right behind.

Darby won the faceoff, ripping it to Grossman who skated forward and one-timed a blazer. The puck drilled into the net and the Mustang fans -- and there were plenty of them -- roared at the big rink.

Tie game, 1-1.

The next goal was just as thrilling. Spike Neely, at the opposite end of the rink, got the puck and passed to Eddie Samuels.

'Sammy' took off, down the left side, crossed over the blue line and into the attacking area with an over-heated defenseman hacking at him. Just a few moments ago, Samuels had passed over to J.C. Caron who took a low-liner of a shot and nearly scored.

This time, Samuels sent a pass over to Travis Roseberry in the slot area.

Samuels to Roseberry. What a combination -- dozens of bigtime goals with teams such as Team Las Vegas, AAA Vail, the AAA Mustangs in faraway arenas.......

But this was one of the biggest, as Roseberry fired and buried the puck into the net.

Las Vegas 2, Phoenix 1, with 3:32 to go in the second.

That kept the fire lit, as defensemen Steve Novotny smoked a long one in, Adam Naglich took off on a rush and knocked in his own rebound and best of all, our top scorer Josh Jasek displayed why he is one of the most dangerous scorers in the West.

While playing short-handed, Naglich stole a loose puck, fed it to Jasek who made a rush and slammed it in.

That was the 5th goal, sealing the Mustangs 10th season victory in a well-played, hard-fought four-game set at the Santa Fe Ice Arena.

Hours later, with all his players in celebration at the Original Pancake House on Cheyenne and Rainbow, the coach looked around and said "great effort, boys....."

Then he added softly to a few parents at his table....."it's only September......we've got bigger games ahead, believe me."

TOURNAMENT NOTEBOOK -- Mustangs would like to take on AAA teams such as the California Jr. Wave, Colorado Outlaws and Littleton Hawks midget teams....Our schedule-makers are working on it....

Pete Ricciardo's Las Vegas midget A team took a shocking 4-1 lead over AAA Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs on Saturday....Kurt Long scored twice, Stringfellow Swan had a goal.....Jr. Ice Dogs rallied to win 7-5 but it was quite thrill watching Pete's team put it on the Long Beach team......

Long Beach then took it out on two teams on Sunday, skating hard and powdering first Valencia 10-1 and then the Ventura Mariners 10-3....That's 20 goals in two games against two pretty decent teams...

There was rink buzz that the Jr. Ice Dogs, smarting over the 2-1 loss to the AAA Mustangs, are looking for a series of revenge games.....

Mustangs wore 9-11-01 red stickers on the back of each helmet and most teams wore American flag stickers on helmets......Valencia Express moms scurried about everyone and felt bad when they couldn't find any small American flags to put onto their team jerseys.......The thought was there, Valencia parents, and it was appreciated by many, believe me.....

Nancy Jasek was our stadium music guru and she also made sure the

national anthem was played before each Mustang game....At the Original Pancake House she said she is "taking requests" for players to have their favorite CDs tracks played at the next home game, which was of great interest to our younger skaters....

There were lots of great stories and great plays this weekend, but perhaps the most remarkable thing was the intense, hard skating from Sean Darby who played at top speed in all four games.....Darby also power-blasted a few skaters with hard checks....

The Mustangs also got top play from both goalies, Cody Fulwiler and Paul Lowden who are both off to terrific starts....Cody already has 4 shutouts....

Big weekend for our defense, which only allowed four goals in four games.....Justin Johnson is working well with T.J. Craig and Mustangs got extraordinary efforts from Eddie Del Grosso, Steve Novotny, Josh Shiode and Chris Anderson.....Gatekeeper Bob Roseberry is the one who sends the 'D' onto the ice each shift....

Mustang coaches invited hockey Dad George Kemper, whose son Geoff plays for the AAA San Diego Jr. Gulls, to go on the team bus Saturday to watch the LA Kings and San Jose Sharks at the MGM Grand........

Here is the summary from the Phoenix game on Sunday....

Josh Jasek, Travis Roseberry Lead the Way, As.....
NOW AAA LAS VEGAS KNOWS
WHAT COMEBACKS ARE ALL ABOUT!!!

Las Vegas -- Geez, just when all seemed so peachy -- with the win over Long Beach already chalked up, recorded, filed away -- along came the Ventura Mariners.

All they did was go on the ice, muscle some skaters around, push to a 2-0 lead. One Las Vegas fan was so stressed, his Starbucks paper cup started shaking and the good stuff was spilling on the cement in the ice cold bleachers at the Santa Fe Ice Arena on Saturday.

Maybe the only person whose heart wasn't pounding like crazy was Mustangs captain Josh Jasek.

"We're only down two goals -- let's go," he said, sort of loud because some of the Mustangs team moms heard it and they were across the rink, up high in the bleacher area.

All of which settled down our biggest fans, particuarly after Josh took a firestorm route to the net, popped in a goal, igniting a string of six in a row as 9-1 AAA Las Vegas outworked Ventura in the closing moments to win, 6-2, in a Fall Classic 17-and-under ice game.

"That's what leadership is all about, having the captain calm on the bench, then leading the way on the ice," explained assistant coach Mike Sullivan of Las Vegas.

There was more good news on the scoring front. Travis Roseberry sent in laser-like pucks, two of which were good for goals. Jasek wound up with two goals, J.C. Caron continued his hot streak with another and Eddie Samuels came out from the behind the net, circled in and sent a back-hand shot in for the sixth and final goal.

Cody Fulwiler, regarded as one of the top goalies in the West, kept his composure, made some terrific stops and got the win.

The victory was the third here in the Fall Classic, with only Las Vegas and the Phoenix Firebirds at 3-0 with a game to go.

And those two teams will settle things Sunday, 8:30 a.m. at the Santa Fe Ice Arena.

Here's the summary from the Ventura game. We'll have lots of neat tournament notes including how Pete Ricciardo's Las Vegas Mustangs midget A team nearly pulled off the shocker of all shockers following our Phoenix game report on Sunday......

With the Final Seconds Ticking Down.....
J.C. CARON SCORES HIS 'BIGGEST GOAL'
--AAA MUSTANGS STUN LONG BEACH AT 0:04!!!!

Las Vegas -- J.C. Caron has scored some mighty big goals, in roller and in ice, but the one he nailed Saturday morning goes up there as one of his biggest ever.

With seconds left to play against the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs, Mustang winger Adam Naglich picked up a skittering puck, took a high-speed route down the left side of the ice and spotted a hard-charging J.C. Caron in the slot area.

Naglich fired over a perfect pass and a micro-second later Caron sent a back-hand shot over the goalie's glove and into the netting. The Mustang moms and dads exploded in the cold bleachers and the Mustangs on the bench were just as wild, banging sticks against the wood rink boards, then began high-fiving and low-fiving.

And when Caron scored the goal and turned to look at the big overhead scoreboard he saw 0:04 in red electric lights.

What an absolutely thrilling win -- Rob Pallin's AAA Las Mustangs 2, Fred Thomson's AAA Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs 1 before an amazingly large crowd at the Santa Fe Arena

It was the second straight win for AAA Las Vegas in the Fall Classic. The Mustangs opened with a solid 4-0 win over the Valencia Express, then went to work against a much stronger Long Beach team which won the California state championship last winter.

It was 'double revenge' for Las Vegas, which lost to Long Beach 3-1 at the Tier II regionals in March and more recently 4-3 at the Hockeyfest in Lakewood, Calif.

Long Beach scored first with 3:36 left in the first period, then Caron scored 33 seconds later following a beauty of a pass from Justin Grosssman.

Then, the Mustang defense took over. Justin Johnson was fabulous, working with a high-energy T.J. Craig. Eddie Del Grosso and Josh Shiode kept puck control and the Mustangs got lots of good hard work from Chris Anderson and Steve Novotny.

Paul Lowden, in the net, got the win. But hours later Mustangs goalie Cody Fulwiler observed much of the Mustangs success is due to the amazing defensive work.

"I don't think a team has taken 20 shots in a single game against us," said Cody. "That's unbelievable."

Valencia only took 12 shots and Long Beach just 17, which are very, very low numbers at this level of play.

Also, except for two very brief stretches, Las Vegas had game control. Even Mustangs coach Rob Pallin cracked a rare game-day smile. This was a big one....

FALL CLASSIC NOTEBOOK -- Our all-heart Mustangs skaters wore red '9-11-01'' stickers on the back of each helmet.....Josh Jasek's mom, Nancy, provided pre-game music and then put on a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Both the Mustangs and Ice Dogs skaters stood at the blue lines, facing the American flag in a very touching moment.....

Faceoffs: Las Vegas won more, 26-20, led by Josh Jasek (9-8), Travis Roseberry (8-7) and Sean Darby (3-0)...Eddie Samuels took six shots, a season-best.....He has nine in two games, the highest total on the Mustangs in the Fall Classix....Justin Johnson fired five shots and seems to be ready to break out and score....

Other Classic scores: Phoenix Firebirds won again, 7-1 over Pete Ricciardo's Mustangs midget a team which replaced the Bay Harbor Redwings here......Jason Allen skated hard and scored the goal for the Mustangs, which was within 3-1 late in first period.....Ventura Mariners outworked Valencia, 3-2, to win its first game here....

Here's all the scores so far:
Las Vegas Mustangs 4, Valencia Express 0
Phoenix Firebirds 6, Ventura Mariners 3
Las Vegas Mustangs 2, Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs 1
Phoenix Firebirds 7, Las Vegas Mustangs minors 1
Ventura Mariners 3, Valencia Express 2

Mustangs majors next two games:
Saturday 2:45 p.m. vs. Ventura Mariners
Sunday 8:30 a.m. vs. Phoenix Firebirds

Las Vegas Goalie Cody Fulwiler Gets His 4th Shutout, As....
AAA LAS VEGAS 'D' TURNS UP THE HEAT!!!

Las Vegas -- Out there, prowling around on defense, was Justin Johnson, T.J. Craig, Eddie Del Grosso and Josh Shiode, And thank goodness they each came out super-strong, because it took Rob Pallin's 7-1 AAA Las Vegas Mustangs about 20 minutes of ice time to get cooking at the Santa Fe Ice Arena on Friday.

Las Vegas beat the Valencia Express, 4-0, and when it was over the short-handed Mustang defense was getting the high-fives. The Mustangs played without defenders Chris Anderson and Steve Novotny who were out serving fighting penalities from the previous game, the win over the Riverside Coyotes two weeks ago.

So, Las Vegas went with just four defensemen who each had a fabulous skate, stopping rushes, fighting off some 5 on 3s and giving goalie Cody Fulwiler the protection he wanted against a Valencia team which earlier this season scored five goals against the AA Los Angeles Jr. Kings and five times against the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs.

It was the fourth shutout of the season for Fulwiler and, get this, his third shutout in his last four starts. He has only allowed one goal in his last 12 periods of hockey, which is sending Mustang stat researcher Dan Shiode into some old scorebooks to see if this is indeed a Mustangs 17-and-under team record.

It was 0-0 after one, when defenseman Eddie Del Grosso spotted winger Eddie Samuels on the right side. Del Grosso flicked a pass to Samuels who instantly blasted a pass over to Spike Neely, posted on the left side of the net.

Neely scored, then said later "that close to the net, I'm always ready to get a pass from Eddie at any time."

That made it 1-0 after two periods. Finally, Josh Jasek's line went to work, at high speed. Winger Adam Naglich, skating hard and playing fiery hockey all evening, drove the puck deep, got behind the net, came out and lasered a pass over to a charging Jasek.

Sometimes, it's just looks so easy. Jasek tapped in the score and it was Las Vegas, 2-0, with 9:30 to play. It was the 10th goal of the season for Josh, the Mustangs leading scorer.

The last two scores came from Mike Sullivan, also a winger on the Jasek line. Sullivan has already had a sensational season and he continued his high-energy play with goals with 6:53 left and 2:59 left. Naglich chalked up two more assists, Jasek one.

Las Vegas had more shots, 22-12 (and 22 is quite a low number for this team) and won more faceoffs, 36-19.

It was a nice win, but there's bigger games ahead in the Fall Classic with the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs (6:00 a.m.) and the Ventura Mariners (2:45 p.m.) on the Saturday schedule.

ICE NOTEBOOK -- On faceoffs, Las Vegas centers Josh Jasek (12-6), Justin Grossman (8-4) and Travis Roseberry (7-3) really dominated.....Roseberry's 'gold line' took the most shots with 10 -- with Spike Neely taking five, Eddie Samuels three and Travis two......In the second game, the Phoenix Firebirds played their first game of the season and came out looking very strong, beating the Ventura Mariners 6-3......Phoenix scored 13 seconds into the game, built a 3-0 lead, fought off two Ventura rallies (it was 3-2, 4-3) and scored an empty-net goal at the finish to win it......

Two Games Friday at the Santa Fe Ice Arena
Will Open Our 'Fall Classic,' As....
JUSTIN JOHNSON, PAUL LOWDEN
MAKE MUSTANG DEBUT THIS WEEKEND!!!

Las Vegas -- Rob Pallin's AAA Las Vegas Mustangs will have two new skaters in the lineup this weekend. Justin Johnson, on defense, and Paul Lowden, a premier goalie, will be in unform as the 6-1 Las Vegas 17-and-under ice team gets set for four games against rugged competition at the Santa Fe Ice Arena.

Justin and Paul played at Shattuck St. Mary's in Minnesota last winter.

The 'Fall Classic' starts in the big rink on Friday, 4 p.m. The Mustangs take on an ambitious Valencia, Calif. Express team which skates hard and likes to attack in the early phases of a game.

In the 5:30 pm Friday game, the AAA Phoenix Firebirds take on the Ventura, Calif. Mariners.

It is unclear which Las Vegas goalie, Cody Fulwiler or Lowden, will start in the opening game. There is rink buzz that Fulwiler will be saved for the big game Saturday, when the Mustangs take on the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs.

At the Thursday eve practice, Johnson fine-tuned on defense working with T.J. Craig. All three of the Mustangs lines moved the puck well, although Fulwiler and Lowden shut down most of the rushes.

Pallin urged his team not to look past Valencia which scored five goals against the AA Los Angeles Jr. Kings at the Hockeyfest in Lakewood, Calif. and then took Long Beach to the closing moments before losing, 6-5, on Sunday.

Friday schedule, with both games at the Santa Fe Ice Arena:

Fall Classic
17-and-under ice

Friday, Sept. 21
4:00 pm -- Las Vegas Mustangs vs. Valencia Express
5:30 pm -- Phoenix Firebirds vs. Ventura Mariners

ICE NOTEBOOK -- J.C. Caron officially comes off the 'D' and onto our blue checking line (with Justin Grossman, Sean Fox or Sean Darby) as a left winger this weekend.....J.C. has three goals, five assists so far.....Eddie Samuels predicts Justin Johnson will be a "force" on defense and will be able to shut down puck carriers, control loose pucks and send short, quick passes over to the forwards....Josh Jasek, Las Vegas' leading scorer (9 goals, 7 assists) is healthy and anxious to play...Winger Mike Sullivan had a good skate on Thursday.....

Scott Zucker, our tournament director for the Turkey Shootout during Thanksgiving Day weekend, says Ontario Senators midgets are coming in.......Oakland Bears have made an inquiry too........

Evan Zucker and the AAA Pikes Peak Tigers were all set to take on the AAA Phoenix Firebirds 14-and-under bantams this weekend, but airline havoc is preventing Phoenix from heading into Colorado Springs....Evan, a winger, has two goals, three assists so far....

We're always looking for scores -- just email them in at lsamu00007@aol.com.........

See everyone at the Blue Line this weekend, Lee

Four Super-Tough Games Ahead
at our 'Fall Classic' Beginning Friday, As....
IT'S DOUBLE REVENGE FOR AAA MUSTANGS
AGAINST THE LONG BEACH JR. ICE DOGS!!!!

Las Vegas -- There's plenty of super-tough teams, top skaters and big-time scorers coming into the Santa Fe Ice Arena beginning on Friday afternoon.

It's the Fall Classic and Rob Pallin's 6-1 AAA Las Vegas Mustangs 17-and-under ice team is taking on some of the best in Southern California.

But there's one team the Mustangs are taking a harder look at -- Fred Thomson's Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs.

For the last 12 months, Las Vegas vs. Long Beach has been an all-out fiery series. Take a look at the final scores since last winter:

LV Mustangs vs. Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs
17-and-under midgets

2000
3-4 to Long Beach at LV Sportspark
2-1 over Long Beach at Mountainview
1-3 to Long Beach at Tri-Cities in Tier II Regionals

2001
3-4 to Long Beach at the Hockeyfest in Lakewood, Calif.

The last two losses were rough ones. Las Vegas led late and both times Long Beach rallied in the final moments, meaning this game will be 'double revenge' for the Mustangs.

And, finally, Pallin's team gets Long Beach on home ice at Santa Fe Ice Arena. Don't worry, even at 6 in the morning on Saturday there will be plenty of heat in this game.

The 'Fall Classic' schedule has been revised, mostly because of the Bay Harbor Red Wings. That team asked out on Tuesday, with the coach noting the team has been banged up horribly in its opening pre-season games.

As a result, Pete Ricciardo's Las Vegas midget A team will see action twice.

Revised schedule:

Friday, Sept. 21
4:00 pm - Las Vegas Mustangs majors vs. Valencia Express
5:30 pm - Phoenix Firebirds vs. Ventura Mariners

Saturday, Sept. 22
6:00 am - Las Vegas Mustangs majors vs. Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs
7:30 am - Las Vegas Mustangs minors vs. Phoenix Firebirds
9:00 am - Ventura Mariners vs. Valencia Express
11:45 am- Las Vegas Mustangs minors vs. Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs
2:45 pm - Las Vegas Mustangs majors vs. Ventura Mariners
4:15 pm - Phoenix Firebirds vs. Valencia Express

Sunday, Sept. 23
7:00 am - Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs vs. Valencia Express
8:30 am - Las Vegas Mustangs majors vs. Phoenix Firebirds
11:30 am - Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs vs. Ventura Mariners

RINK NOTEBOOK -- The Valencia Express was all over the Long Beach Ice Dogs in Lakewood, Calif. on Sunday. Valencia led 2-1 after one, 5-3 after two -- then Long Beach rallied to win a thriller, 6-5......AAA San Diego and the AAA California Wave midget teams battled -- literally -- to a 2-2 tie in Sunday. There were over 50 penalities called and it got pretty nasty, we're told......So far, only the LaJolla Jaguars 17-and-under midget team is in our Thanksgiving Turkey Shoot tournament. But Scott Zucker, tournament director (skatin@lvcm.com) expects a lot more.....In the bantam division, for example, three teams from Alaska are coming in.......We're lucky, maybe even blessed, because winger Sean Fox came out of a pretty serious car wreck with just a few injuries. He'll be back at full strength real soon, he says......Yes, that was Doc Johnson, long-time Mustangs coach, up there in the bleachers with the rest of us, watching his son Justin and the Mustangs practice on Monday eve... Micah Sanford's Chilliwack Chiefs are off to a 2-1 start in the BCHL....

Mustangs Getting Wired In for
'Fall Classic' Sept. 21-23, As....
JUSTIN JOHNSON WILL BE IN LINEUP
FOR AAA LAS VEGAS ON FRIDAY!!!

Las Vegas -- Rob Pallin's strong AAA Las Vegas Mustangs just got stronger.

Since returning from a 3-0 swing at Riverside a week ago, here's what's unfolded at the big ice rink:

-- Top defenseman Justin Johnson, a long-time premier Las Vegas skater, returned from Shattuck St. Mary's this week. He was on the ice here Saturday and had a spectacular workout at the Santa Fe Ice Arena.

--Top goalie Paul Lowden, who played at Shattuck last winter, has returned to the Mustangs. He will team with Cody Fulwiler, giving Las Vegas one of its best-ever combinations in the net.

--With Johnston on defense, coach Pallin has asked J.C. Caron to come off the defense and return to a wing position. He will work on a line with center Justin Grossman and winger Sean Fox.

--One more skater, a forward from Canada, is expected to arrive soon and try out for the AAA Mustangs.

--Jason Allen moves over to Pete Ricciardo's midget A team. Coach Ricciardo welcomed Jason with a nice story on the Mustangs A web page this week. Ricciardo also announced that Derek Pacuk will be captain and Brian Carmody and Demetrius Amore will be assistant captains. Allen, who always plays at top speed, is an exciting addition to this very young team. He'll skate hard and will unleash firepower from assorted ranges.

Pallin's AAA Mustangs are 6-1, with some challenging games against the Valencia Express, Phoenix Firebirds, Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs and the Bay Harbor Red Wings on the schedule for the Fall Classic beginning Friday, Sept. 21.

The Mustangs return to the rink for a Monday workout, with all skaters on the ice at 8:20 p.m.

HOCKEY NOTEBOOK -- Mustangs had a high-energy workout Saturday, with the three lines skating at game speed.....Johnson was terrific on defense, shutting down some of our top snipers, getting the puck and flicking it to wingers...Wow, he's going to be fun to watch, particuarly when the Mustangs take on the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs this weekend....

Some revised times for Sunday at Santa Fe. The Friday and
Saturday matchups and times are OK, but here's the new information
for Sunday, Sept. 23:

7:00 a.m. - Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs vs. Valencia Express
8:30 a.m. - Bay Harbor Red Wings vs. Phoenix Firebirds
Noon - Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs vs. Ventura Mariners
1:45 p.m. - Las Vegas Mustangs vs. Bay Harbor Red Wings

We were able to pick up some AA/AAA 17-and-ice scores off some team web pages....

South Coast Sabers 3, Norwalk Knights 0
Ontario Senators 3, Beach City Lightning 2

The San Jose Jr. Sharks are listed #1 in our West Top 10.
Here are the Jr. Sharks 17-and-under ice scores to date:

San Jose Jr. Sharks (4-0)
7-3 over Ventura Mariners
3-1 over El Segundo
8-1 over Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs
4-2 over AA LA Jr. Kings

One of the better 17-and-under ice teams in Southern California are the El Segundo Regents, rostered with many former West Valley Wolves skaters. Here's are the El Segundo scores so far.....

El Segundo Regents (6-1)
4-2 over Bay Harbor
3-2 over Bay Harbor
1-3 vs. San Jose Jr. Sharks
4-1 over Ontario Senators
3-1 over LaJolla Jaguars
5-1 over Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs #2
3-2 over Riverside Coyotes

AT THE RINK -- Buddy Caron, father of J.C. and a long-time fixture at the rink boards, is a new rink supervisor at the Santa Fe.....And talk about challenges: On Friday eve Buddy changed the blades on our propane-powered Zamboni...That took some time and a few cups of black rink coffee to get the job done....

AAA Phoenix center Cody Moran will be at our rink this coming weekend....and he's got a compelling story: a brave skater who twice has been out with arm fractures....His father, Joe, coaches many of our Mustangs (including Travis Roseberry, T.J. Craig and Eddie Samuels) when they suit up for the Arizona Roadrunners at the annual Disney Shootout on Ice in Anaheim.....Good luck, Cody, at the Fall Classic.....Justin Hart, always a top scoring threat, returns to AAAPhoenix.....

We're looking for scores, particuarly the weekend games between AAA San Diego Jr. Gulls and AAA California Wave midget teams.....George Kemper, please check in when you can.....

Micah Sanford's Chilliwack Chiefs Junior A team is off to a nice 2-0 start.......We'll keep everyone posted on his progess during the season...

Weekend Hockey Preview......
AAA ICE TEAMS IN A SCRAMBLE -- NO FLIGHTS!
Mustangs Coach Rob Pallin Offers Help to the AAA Gulls

Las Vegas -- The national tragedy has even hit the nerve center of our Western region ice teams. The AAA San Diego Gulls couldn't get air transportation to the AAA Washington Totems 17-and-under ice tournament for this weekend, so the Gulls went on a manhunt for available ice.

Rob Pallin, coach of the AAA Las Vegas Mustangs, offered two ice slots at the Santa Fe Ice Arena for Saturday (Mustangs vs. Gulls in a wild doubleheader!), but the Gulls instead made arrangements to travel to Westminster, Calif. and take on the AAA California Wave in a two-game set.

The Gulls will take a car caravan for the games.

The AAA Pikes Peak Tigers, who skate out of Colorado Springs, were also unable to get air transportation to the Washington Totems tournament. Pikes Peak could take on two new AAA teams in the Rockies, either Hyland Hills or the Littleton Hawks.

Meanwhile, Pallin's team will work out 9:00 a.m. at Santa Fe Ice Arena on Saturday.

MEANWHILE -- Justin Johnson and Kyle Slattery had a skate with Pallin's AAA Mustangs on Thursday at the Santa Fe Ice Arena. Both are returning from Shattuck St. Mary's in Minnesota......Justin got here the hard way: when the Minnesapolis airport was shut down earlier this week, he drove a car back to Las Vegas....Johnson and Slattery will probably skate for the Mustangs during the six-team Fall Classic which begins Sept. 21 at the Santa Fe Ice Arena....

Mustang winger Sean Darby, who wrenched his left shoulder in Riverside last weekend, skated with the team Thursday....Hard-hitting winger Sean Fox (deep bruise, right shoulder) is still off the ice....

LaJolla Jaguars of San Diego are the irst 17-and-under midget team to enter our Turkey Shootout Tournament during Thanksgiving Day weekend. The Jaguars will probably take on both our AAA and A midget teams.

So who takes on the most shots on the Mustangs? After seven games, here are the shot leaders:

Josh Jasek 32
Justin Grossman 22
Adam Naglich 22
Spike Neely 22
Sean Fox 21
Mike Sullivan 21
Eddie Del Grosso 18
Steve Novotny 16
Travis Roseberry 16
Eddie Samuels 15
J.C. Caron 13
Josh Shiode 11
T.J. Craig 10
Jason Allen 9
Sean Darby 9
Chris Anderson 7

Also, the top ice teams usually win at least 60 per cent of all faceoffs. After seven games, the AAA Mustangs are 221-131 for a 62.8 percentage.....that's some nice work.....

Game schedule for the Fall Classic AA/AAA at the Santa Fe Ice Arena in Las Vegas:

Mustangs Beat Bay Harbor, LaJolla and Riverside, As…..
AAA LAS VEGAS RACKING UP THE GOALS!!!!

Riverside, Calif. -- He's something special, that Josh Jasek. He is the centerpiece of a 6-1 AAA Las Vegas Mustangs ice team which is on a hot run, racking up wins over historically tough opponents and making it look frightening easy.

This past weekend, Jasek returned to the Ice Town Arena where he played for the AAA Desert Coyotes last winter. Jasek, now wearing the red, black and white of the Mustangs, and his 'red line' led the charge. Jasek scored the first four goals, winding up with seven goals, two assists as Rob Pallin's Mustangs mowed down Bay Harbor, 9-0, the LaJolla Jaguars, 9-0, and the Riverside Coyotes, 5-1.

That's 23 team goals in three games, which is a very high total.

Each game had its tense moments, but Las Vegas countered with an arsenal of attackers. When defenses keyed on Jasek, and Riverside tried that the most, that left outside lanes and faraway corners available for hard-charging wingers like Adam Naglich, Mike Sullivan, Eddie Samuels, Spike Neely, Sean Darby and Sean Fox.

Pallin used the three games to study line action and defensive combinations. Right now, his Las Vegas 17-and-under team is far ahead of the team which won 35 times last winter. That Mustangs team didn't begin play until the third week of September and actually began to blossom after the first of the New Year.

There are very big games ahead for AAA Las Vegas. Already, Pallin is shaping the team for future firefights against powers such as the San Jose Jr. Sharks, the Los Angeles Jr. Kings and the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs.

WEEKEND NOTEBOOK -- Eddie Samuels got his first Mustangs hat trick, scoring three against LaJolla…..Eddie's first goal was the best, a short-handed one which he fought off a heated defender all the way to the net….. Another beauty: On the power play, the Mustangs cycled the puck and Travis Roseberry skated into the slot area, then made a quick pass to Eddie who was posted all alone on the right side of the net…..It was an easy tap-in goal…..

Defenseman Steve Notvotny skated hard, taking the puck out of the attacking zones in all three games…..T.J. Craig played super-smart hockey and knocked in two goals this weekend…Sean Fox unleashed some very hard checks in all games....When Sean Darby (wrenched shoulder) couldn't play in third game, J.C. Caron was moved to left wing on the blue line…..Against Riverside, Caron lasered in a blast of a shot through the five-hole….Nice weekend for defenseman Jason Allen, who unloaded some hard shots from long-range....Strong weekend for Adam Naglich who was really motoring.....Cody Fulwiler strong in the net, getting two more shutout victories.....

Bay Harbor, LaJolla went down with barely a fight, but that wasn't the case with Josh's former teammates with the Riverside Coyotes on their home ice….After Las Vegas battled to a three goal lead, there was all-out brawl in front of the Riverside net….Four skaters (two from each team) were asked to leave and referees ordered a running time clock for the remainder of the second period….. Because of time constraints (another game was coming on), the third period was called off…..

The Mustang injury report: Darby (shoulder) did not play in third game……Fox has a pretty deep right shoulder bruise…..He left during the Riverside game to ice the shoulder….

Next on the schedule: Phoenix, Long Beach, Ventura, Bay Harbor and the Valencia Express head into Santa Fe Ice Arena during the Sept. 21-23 weekend…..It'll be the home opening games for the Mustangs, who will play four times during the weekend…

AAA L.V. MUSTANGS GET SET
FOR BAY HARBOR SATURDAY NIGHT!!!

Riverside, Calif. -- Big, strong, mean-spirited and looking for a big win.

Geez, it's not going to be a whole lot of fun Saturday night.

Rob Pallin's 3-1 AAA Las Vegas Mustangs take on the punishing,
hard-hitting red and white of the Bay Harbor Red Wings to begin a three-game series of games for 17-and-under teams at the Ice Town Arena this weekend.

"We're really expecting Bay Harbor to play us tough," said Pallin, sizing up the Red Wings.

Here's how the three weekend games are set:

Saturday, Sept. 8
9:00 p.m. - vs. Bay Harbor Red Wings

Sunday, Sept. 9
11:00 a.m. - vs. LaJolla Jaguars of San Diego
5:00 p.m. - vs. Riverside Coyotes

The first will be a revenge game for the Mustangs, who played as bantams and were tossed around in a 9-4 loss to Bay Harbor two years ago on their home ice at the historic Skating Edge Arena on Western Ave.

"You don't forget games like that," said Eddie Samuels, Mustangs winger. "You file them away in the back of your head and sooner or later, the same teams meet again."

Las Vegas is coming off a solid-performing 3-1 weekend at the 18-team Hockeyfest at the Glacial Gardens in Lakewood, Calif. Las Vegas beat Beach City, South Coast, Cuppertino and lost to the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs by a goal.

The Riverside team didn't play at the Hockeyfest, but Bay Harbor and LaJolla did.

Here's how those two teams did last weekend:

AA Bay Harbor Red Wings
17-and-unders
2-3 to El Segundo
5-3 over Cupertino
1-4 to San Diego

AA LaJolla Jaguars of San Diego
17-and-unders
3-2 over Paramount
1-5 to Ontario
1-12 to AAA L.A. Jr. Kings bantams

ICE NOTEBOOK -- Mustang skaters voted Josh Jasek as captain, Spike Neely and Steve Novotney as the assistant captains....Jasek is off to an explosive start, skating extremely well and is already leading scorer with two goals, five assists...Neeley was our Blue Line's 'All Heart' player this past season and Novotney is a big strong defenseman coming over from Team Las Vegas at the twin-sheet Ice Gardens on Swenson...

No line changes this week, but there is rink buzz that J.C. Caron may see spot duty as a winger....He's played primarily as a defenseman in the first four games...

Just like last week, Cody Fulwiler will be the only Mustangs goalie in uniform.....Center Justin Grossman and right wing Eddie Samuels first two here, coming in Friday eve.....

Injury list: Spike Neely's right knee still sore, but he's OK to skate this weekend.....

We're Back on I-15 This Weekend, As....
SCHEDULE HEATS UP FOR AAA LAS VEGAS!!!!

Las Vegas -- Check the wounded, have a light workout, gas up the big vans, turn the steering wheels towards highway I-15 South.

Rob Pallin's AAA Las Vegas Mustangs hit the road again, this time to the Ice Town Arena in Riverside, Calif. The Mustangs, coming off a solid 3-1 performance at the 18-team Hockeyfest in Lakewood, Calf. last week, are set to take on three top SCAHA ice teams this weekend.

Then, hide the little ones. On Sept. 21-23 the fiery, hard-hitting Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs, the AAA Phoenix Firebirds and the Ventura Mariners are heading into the Santa Fe Ice Arena for a series of what should be all-out, action-packed hockey for 17-and-unders.

GM Bob Roseberry also noted the Mustangs are in the Silver Sticks ice tournament in Denver on Dec. 1-3. Denver is where AA Arvada has ruled for years, winning this tournament three straight times. Last year, Arvada twice beat Shattuck St. Mary's black team, which included Justin Johnson of Las Vegas, by 2-1 and 1-0.

Pallin was satisfied with the Mustangs' level of play and intensity during the opening games and the coach is expected to send out the same three lines. One exception may be J.C. Caron, a defenseman who worked a few shifts as a winger during the weekend. He may get more spot time with the forwards.

Cody Fulwiler, with a solid 2.00 goalie average, will be in the net this weekend.

ICE NOTES -- AAA San Diego Gulls opened its ice season with 6-0, 4-2 wins over the AAA Ontario Senators. On Saturday eve, the Gulls had more shots, 43-17, but wound up tied 2-2 when the AAA California
Wave muscled in and scored with 1:30 to play......

AAA Gulls 17-and-under roster for 2001-2002:
James Avila, goalie; Remy Bickoff, center; Sean Birkle, winger; EricCarucci, defense; William Charland, winger; Dale Clawson, defense; Ian Drummond, defense; Bernardo Elizondo, winger; Adam Geisler, winger; Jared Goodrich, winger; Steve Hong, defense; Brian Johnson, winger; Geoffrey Kemper, center; Justin Liebow, center; Dane Ludolph, winger; Aaron McKenzie, goalie; Reza Sharghi, defense; Michael Spawton, winger; Charles Vaughn, defense.

MORE NOTES -- Tanar Nobles is a tough winger who goes all-out on the ice, each and every game. He was one of Eddie Samuels' most rugged teammates on Jamie O'Leary's AAA Vail bantam team last winter.....Nobles this year will suit up for the Hyland Hills midget team in Colorado....Good luck, Tanar.....Tell your Dad to check in with us, please.....

One Mustangs skater said he spotted "seven flavors of Gatorade" on the Las Vegas bench before the game against Long Beach......Our skaters want to thank Bob Roseberry for providing all of chilled good stuff before each game.....

On Midgetaa.com, the San Jose Jr. Sharks and the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs are listed 1-2 in pre-season ratings.....At the Hockeyfest last weekend, San Jose beat Long Beach, 8-1, and then worked over the AA L.A. Jr. Kings.....

Oren Galor hooked up with Evan Zucker in Colorado Springs over the weekend....Oren is a long-time Las Vegas roller coach now living in Ft. Collins, Colorado......Evan is a top scorer and playmaker with the AAA Pikes Peak Tigers bantam ice team.....

Larry Sanford calls, noting son Micah is doing well in the Chilliwack Chiefs Junior A training camp.....and, Larry has over 250 signups for his fall house hockey roller leagues at Crystal Palace on Rancho...That's a very high number of skaters for the 'Little House of Champions' where many of our top skaters today started out just a few years ago....

Here's are the official numbers from the Mustangs stats guru, Dan Shiode.

Mustangs Look Very Sharp,
Go 3-1 at Hockeyfest, As....
NOW, IT'S THE AAA LAS VEGAS MUSTANGS!!!

Lakewood, Calif. -- Hey, we're heading into big-time hockey.

Rob Pallin's AA Las Vegas Mustangs are now the AAA Mustangs -- at least we are in the Southwest Youth Hockey League. The Mustangs, 34-15-3 last winter, are now officially an AAA team in the league and will take on elite travel teams this coming season.

In other words, we have new teams to sweat about.

After looking crisp and sharp in four games at the Glacial Gardens this past weekend, the Mustangs will now enter league play against the AAA San Diego Gulls, L.A. Jr. Kings minors, San Jose Jr. Sharks, Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs, Utah Grizzlies, and the Phoenix Firebirds.

This is an amazing, considering two years ago the Mustangs 17-and-under ice team had a 4-31 record.

That turned around with the arrival of Pallin who somehow, someway reunited the best available Las Vegas skaters at the Santa Fe Ice Arena, installed a very strict discipline system of play and more recently added top AAA skaters to the Mustang roster.

The Mustangs came out strong this weekend, looking sharp on breakout plays, unleashing aggressive hard-skating penalty killing units and getting unexpected firepower from wingers such as Mike Sullivan (five goals) and Spike Neely (five goals).

Totaled, Las Vegas outscored its four opponents, 22-7 and out-shot every team by a landslide.

Earlier, we gave summaries of the 6-0 win over Beach City and the 8-2 stunner over the South Coast Sabers. Here's what happened on Saturday and Sunday at the Glacial Gardens:

Las Vegas 5, Cupertino, Calif. 2 // Eddie Samuels scored his first two goals of the season, the first a liner in the lower right corner and the second a nice wrist shot top shelf left. Sullivan and J.C. Caron scored in the first period to give Las Vegas a 2-1 lead, then Eddie scored to make it 3-1. It was 4-2 when Neely, while killing off a power play, dove to smother a liner of a shot from the point area. The puck drove into Neely's right knee and the tough winger was down for a few moments. But he later returned to skate and was OK on Sunday. Las Vegas had more shots, 48-15.

Las Vegas Mustangs 2 1 2 - 5
Cupertino, Calif. 1 1 0 - 2

LV- Mike Sullivan (Josh Jasek)
LV - J.C. Caron (Josh Jasek)
LV- Eddie Samuels (Spike Neely)
LV- Eddie Del Grosso
LV- Eddie Samuels (Eddie Del Grosso, Justin Grossman)

Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs 4, Las Vegas Mustangs 3 // Terrific, action-packed game won by the Jr. Ice Dogs who chipped in three goals in the final period. Las Vegas broke to a 2-0 lead as Sullivan, getting a beautiful pass from Jasek, and Caron each scored. Ice Dogs scored one in the second to make it 2-1 going into the third. Ice Dogs scored on a power play to tie it 2-2 with 4:25 left, then went ahead 3-2 with 3:37 to go. Ten seconds later, Del Grosso took a winding, weaving route to the net, deked the goalie and tapped in a breath-taking tying goal. Game-winner by the Ice Dogs was scored with 1:27 to play. Las Vegas had more shots, 27-22.

Las Vegas Mustangs 2 0 1 - 3
Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs 0 1 3 - 4

LV- Mike Sullivan (Josh Jasek)
LV- J.C. Caron (Adam Naglich)
LV- Eddie Del Grosso (unassisted)

Here's how the three Mustang lines did this weekend, with individual statistics included:

Gold Line (7/5)
LW-Spike Neely (5/1)
C-Travis Roseberry (0/3)
RW-Eddie Samuels (2/1)

Red Line (7/8)
LW-Adam Naglich (0/2)
C-Josh Jasek (2/5)
RW-Mike Sullivan (5/0)

Blue Line (4/5)
LW-Sean Fox (0/1)
C-Justin Grossman (2/2)
RW-Sean Darby (2/1)

Defensemen (2/8)
J.C. Caron (2/2), Eddie Del Grosso (2/1), Steve Novotney (0/3),
Josh Shiode (0/2), Jason Allen (0/0), Chris Anderson (0/0) and
T.J. Craig (0/0).

TOURNAMENT NOTEBOOK -- Josh Jasek blazed at top speed in every game, was unselfish with his passing and gamesmanship but most incredible of all -- he was 62-22 on face-offs......From the bench: Our skaters were raving about the play from towering defenseman Chris Anderson who played extremely hard protecting the net for goalie Cody Fulwiler.....Mike Sullivan (18), Justin Grossman (16), Sean Fox (15), Adam Naglich (13) and Jasek (13) took the most shots in the
four game set......On the plus/minus chart, Jasek was a +6. We'll have many other weekend stats posted by Tuesday eve........

On the injury list: Spike Neely, stitches below his chin and a sore right knee but he's OK to skate....

Only one 17-and-under team, the San Jose Jr. Sharks, managed to go 4-0.....Las Vegas, L.A. Jr. Kings and Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs each went 3-1... Both AA San Diego midget teams labored, to put it mildly.....El Segundo's roster was loaded, we're told, with former West Valley Wolves skaters......

Las Vegas is off to Riverside, Calif. this coming weekend, with league opponents to be named.....

Scott Zucker notes the high-powered AA Las Vegas Mustangs squirt ice team won twice this weekend, by 11-0 and 7-0..... Pete Ricciardo's Mustangs midget A team got stronger each game and won three times over the weekend....Pete will have game reports on the Mustangs Midget A web page...We saw Alex Redmond, Titans 16 roller star, make a nice rush and blast a shot in from the left side against Beach City on Saturday....Hard-skating Daniel Webster is on Pete's team.....Mustang midget a goalie Jason Weeks looks extremely sharp.....

We're looking for scores from the AAA San Diego Gulls/AAA Ontario Senators series over the weekend.......Rink board parents said Ontario also had a game with San Jose Jr. Sharks on Saturday eve.....

We'll have lots more neat stuff posted this week.....

Lakewood, Calif. -- Rob Pallin's AA Las Vegas Mustangs are off to a very strong start, beating Beach City, 5-0 and following that with a stunning 8-2 win over a hard-hitting South Coast Sabers team which was on its home ice at the 18-team Hockeyfest for 17-and-under ice teams.

So while ice fans here are all abuzz about the AA Los Angeles Jr. Kings, the San Jose Jr. Sharks and the Los Angeles Jr. Ice Dogs, Pallin's team is making a statement that the Mustangs are one of the top teams in the Western region.

Next up are the Cupertino, Calif. Cougars who are 0-2 here. The Mustangs take on Cupertino at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday. Las Vegas should win this one, then the Mustangs will brace themselves with a showdown with the unbeaten Los Angeles Jr. Ice Dogs on Monday, 7:45 a.m.

Spike Neely, playing his second spectacular game, slammed in three goals. This was a pretty tense game early, as South Coast came out hitting extremely hard and put lots of pressure on Mustangs goalie Cody Fulwiler. Mike Sullivan scored on slap shot, then Neely scored to make it 2-0 and Las Vegas fought off a long 5-on-3 penalty kill at the end of the first period to take control of this one. Las Vegas had more shots, 37-19. Defenseman J.C. Caron worked a few shifts as a winger during this one....
