Weekend Hockey Notebook
Right Now, He's the Only Mustangs Goalie!!!!
FOR CODY, HELP IS ON THE WAY!!!

Las Vegas -- After seven straight starts, it looks like Mustangs goalie Cody Fulwiler is finally getting some help.

Paul Lowden, out with an injured right leg, is getting re-examined on Monday. If all goes well, Lowden will return to practice next week and be available for Las Vegas' rugged Southwest Youth Hockey League five-game series Nov. 10-12 in San Diego.

"Ideally, I'd like to take two goalies to San Diego," said Mustangs coach Rob Pallin. "We have five games, including three pretty tough ones (L.A. Jr. Kings, Phoenix Firebirds and San Jose Jr. Sharks) in a row."

So far, Fulwiler is 14-2-1 with an 1.29 average; Lowden is 3-0 with at 1.33. Both are regarded as top goalies and their goals allowed averages are extremely low. Fulwiler was spectacular in the net last weekend, giving an all-out effort in that wild game 3-2 game vs. Long Beach.

Pallin, meanwhile, is trying to round up games for Nov. 3-4. He has interest in the 17-2-1 Mustangs taking on the AAA California Wave, or perhaps a weekend series with the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs majors and minors teams. At practice this week, Pallin told his skaters to be available for weekend action.

Pallin also plans to be at home ice this weekend, taking a close look at the top skaters on Pete Ricciardo's Mustangs midget A team. Pete's 5-4 team has an intriguing three-game series vs. the Tucson Storm which begins on Saturday morning.

ICE NOTEBOOK -- Forgot to mention it earlier, but there were some old black and gold Riverside Jets banners hung with care at the new Ontario ice rink, home of the AAA Ontario Senators…..Rink board parents said AAA San Diego Jr. Gulls and AA San Jose Jr. Sharks midgets had a brutally-tough two games last weekend, with lots of heated stickwork, pushing, shoving and all-out fighting….San Jose won the first game 4-1; San Diego took the second by the same score….

College ice hockey scouts (including those from Denver U) are in hot pursuit of Las Vegas center Micah Sanford, who is having a career season with the Chilliwack Chiefs Junior A in the BCHL…..In 14 starts, Sanford has 14 goals, 13 assists for 27 points -- an amazing total….

Evan Zucker of Las Vegas is not only skating well, but racking up points too for the AAA Pikes Peak Tigers 14-and-under bantam team….In 19 starts he has 10 goals, 15 assists and on the ice he's +25….Nice work, Evan...

For AAA Pikes Peak Miners midgets, former AAA Vail, Colorado bantams Colin Kingston (6 goals, 4 assists), Scott Tittle (4 goals, 3 assists) are off to a terrific start…Good luck Colin and Scott in the King of the Rockies tournament which starts next weekend in Pikes Peak….

SPIKE NEELY RETURNING
TO AAA MUSTANGS LINEUP!!!

Las Vegas -- It's thumbs up for Spike Neely.

Neely, a top hard-skating winger and a nine-goal scorer for the AAA Las Vegas Mustangs, said he will be back in the lineup "as soon as we start playing games again." He has been out with a fractured right thumb, sustained in the recent Southwest Youth Hockey League games in Kearns, Utah.

Spike, voted 'All Heart' last winter, will return to the "gold line" of center Travis Roseberry and winger Eddie Samuels. The Mustangs are back in action Nov. 10-12 for five Southwest Youth Hockey League games in San Diego.

+++++++++++++

Shooting under pressure. Quicker releases. Fire whenever you hit the attack zone.

That's what NHLer Ken Quinney told the Mustangs centers and wingers at practice this week.

Head coach Rob Pallin enlisted Quinney (NHL Quebec Nordiques, IHL Las Vegas Thunder and lots more) to fine-tune the Mustangs attackers.

Quinney said that, on a 2 on 1 break, cross the blue line, angle inside of the blue faceoff dots and attack "to generate more scoring opportunities."

Quinney also ran the Mustangs on a series of intense shooting drills.

++++++++++++++

JOSH JASEK +22, JOSH SHIODE +19

Mustangs captain Josh Jasek and defenseman Josh Shiode are the plus/minus leaders after 20 games. Skaters get a +1 each time they are on the ice when a goal is scored; a minus-one when a goal is allowed.

El Segundo is 5-0 in SCAHA action and is only one of two teams to beat San Jose....

Two teams added: high-energy Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs minors who beat Las Vegas 3-2, then lost to Ventura Mariners, 4-1, in next game; and, the Capital Thunder of Roseville, Calif. which is off to a 7-0 start.

Two teams dropped: L.A. Jr. Kings minors (they are actually a AAA Tier I team) and the Oakland Bears which have lost three in a row by, amazingly, the same exact score, 4-3.....

BIGGER GAMES AHEAD FOR 17-2-1 AAA MUSTANGS!!!!

Crunch time is coming for Rob Pallin's AAA Las Vegas Mustangs.

After a 3-1 weekend, the 17-2-1 Mustangs are gearing up to take their game to the next level, to take on more challenging teams in Midwest and Pacific regions.

Much of this was discussed by Pallin and his assistants this pastweekend in Riverside, Calif. where the Mustangs played a four-gameset. Pallin is also blue-penciling in unique, specialized practices with particular attention to his wingers and defensemen.

The Mustangs staff is anxious to get winger Spike Neely back on the ice. Spike, who got the 'All Heart' award last season, is a high-speed, intense skater who works on the same line with Travis Roseberry and Eddie Samuels.

Neely, out with a fracture of the right thumb, is expected to be set for a five-game series of Southwest Youth Hockey League Games on Nov. 10-12 at the Iceoplex in Escondido, Calif.

The Mustangs still have an open spot on their roster. It's not certain if the spot will be used, as Pallin has until December to lock in his final roster.

Las Vegas, at 4-0-1, and the San Jose Jr. Sharks, 4-0-1, are the top two teams in AAA league play.

Here is the Mustangs schedule:

All Games at the Iceoplex, Escondido, Calif.

MUSTANGS 6, AAA ONTARIO SENATORS 2

Las Vegas out-shot Ontario 15-2 in the first period and bolted to a 4-0 lead, at the brand-new Civic Center Arena in Ontario. Josh Jasek scored the first Mustangs goal of the weekend, then Sean Fox rattled in two quick ones, including a short-handed goal. At finish of game, Eddie Samuels was locked in a stickfight with long-time roller rival, Phil Riberio. There was 0:05.8 left to play when Eddie put some nasty stickwork on Riberio, top scorer for the Armadillos 16s in Southern California. Riberio, now skating ice, returned fire by grabbing and twisting Ed's helmet which resulted in immediate on-ice fireworks. Both went out on roughing calls.

LONG BEACH JR. ICE DOGS MINORS 3
LAS VEGAS MUSTANGS 2

Terrific high-energy Saturday night game played before a very large number of fans who packed the bleachers and circled the rink boards at the super-chilled Icetown Arena in Riverside.

Long Beach, 12-3-1 and rated #5 in nation by Midgetaa.com, scored two quick ones to open the game. Mustangs rallied dramatically in third period, getting goals from Travis Roseberry and Adam Naglich.

The Jr. Ice Dogs then shook loose on a breakaway and scored to make it 3-2 with 5:28 to go. There were at least three penalities in last 2:00 vs. Long Beach, giving Mustangs a power play advantage. Mustangs went right to the attack, hammering many shots but Long Beach held on to win a chiller of a game.

Long Beach was quick, mobile and had precise passing in the attacking zones. Mustangs had to fight off some early-game 5-on-3s and got a great effort from goalie Cody Fulwiler who made many spectacular saves.

"They were slippery," is the way Eddie Samuels described Long Beach.

Long Beach out-shot the Mustangs in the first period (11-8), second period (10-4) while the Mustangs had more shots in the third period (11-6).

It was a great, well-played game, with parents and fans from both teams standing and applauding at the finish….

JOSH JASEK'S 16 GOALS, 16 ASSISTS
LEAD 14-1-1 LAS VEGAS MUSTANGS!!!!

Las Vegas -- Josh Jasek, our hard-skating 6' 1" 180-pound center, is the runaway score leader for the AAA Las Vegas Mustangs. He has 16 goals, 16 assists in his 16 starts for the 17-and-under ice team.

Dan Shiode, the Mustangs official stat-keeper, also pointed out some stunning Mustang goalie statistics:

Goalie Cody Fulwiler is 11-1-1 is 13 starts, allowing only 1.15 goals per game. Paul Lowden is 3-0, with a 1.33 average. Both averages are extremely low numbers.

"When our defense only allows 20 shots or less in a game, goalie averages are going to be terrific," said Cody. "We're getting a lot of help out front."

Two hard-hitting Mustang defensemen, Eddie Del Grosso (5/7) and T.J. Craig (4/6) are also scoring an extraordinary number of points.

With winger Spike Neely out (fracture of the right thumb) Mustangs coach Rob Pallin revised two of the three lines. Here is how the Mustangs will be on the ice, starting with the game at the AAA Ontario Senators on Saturday, 2:30 p.m.

Weekend Hockey Preview....
Las Vegas Mustangs Heading West, As…..
BATTLE OF TOP 10 TEAMS
SATURDAY NIGHT IN CALIFORNIA!!!

Riverside, Calif. -- Is Long Beach #2 a big-time team?

Or a paper tiger?

No one is quite certain, not even Las Vegas Mustangs ice coach Rob Pallin. But the rink buzz in Long Beach is that the #2 ice team may be better than the #1 team.

That's what the Southern California rink board parents are saying. And even the ratings people at Midgetaa.com are believers.

The over-achieving Long Beach Jr Ice Dogs #2 are rated #5 in the nation, one notch above Pallin's AAA Las Vegas Mustangs who take on this Long Beach team at the Icetown Arena in Riverside on Saturday night.

For sure, this much is certain: Long Beach's #2 team includes all first-year 17-and-under skaters with the exception of one 2nd-year skater and two bantams. The Long Beach team is 12-3-1 and and in some instances, racking up lots of goals and running teams out of arenas.

Here's the Mustangs weekend lineup of games, in order:

Saturday, Oct. 20 -- 2:30 pm, at Ontario
LAS VEGAS MUSTANGS VS. AAA ONTARIO SENATORS

//In last two games, Ontario has knocked in 12 goals. Ontario stunned the California Wave, 8-6, in an absolutely wild scorefest. This will be intriguing game for Las Vegas which takes on a true recruited AAA team for the first time this fall.

SCAHA POSTS NEW SCHEDULE
FOR AAA LAS VEGAS MUSTANGS !!!

Las Vegas -- Rob Pallin's AAA Las Mustangs have an entirely new schedule of games Oct. 20-21, at least according to the one posted today on SCAHA.com.

Here's the weekend schedule, according to the schedule-makers at the Southern California Amateur Hockey (SCAHA):

Saturday, Oct. 20
2:30 pm -- at AAA Ontario, Calif. Senators
9:10 pm -- vs. AA Long Beach #2 at Icetown, Riverside, Calif.
Sunday, Oct. 21
8:35 am - vs. AA Valencia Express at Icetown, Riverside, Calif.
12:20 pm - vs. AA Ontario Senators at Icetown, Riverside, Calif.

The most intriguing game is the first game. AAA Ontario plays all of the elite teams in Southern California. However, it looks like the El Segundo Regents are off the board as of this moment.

Meanwhile, to the weekend scoreboard:
LAS VEGAS MUSTANGS MIDGET A's 4,
TEAM LAS VEGAS MIDGET A's 2

This turned out to be a fiercely played game, with four skaters ejected for fighting. Pete Ricciardo's Mustangs team, now 4-4, simply had too much firepower for Team Las Vegas which came in 2-0 (beating the L.V. Outlaws twice) Sunday at the Santa Fe Ice Arena.

Mustang goal scorers included Demetrius Amore, Kurt Long (getting a nice pass from Jason Allen, who initiated the play), Daniel Webster (left side, nice low liner) and Adam Ricciardo (another low liner, from the right side).

Goalie Joel Spurgeon got the win for the Mustangs.

ICE NOTEBOOK -- AAA Mustangs goalie Cody Fulwiler, who just took his Level 4 officiating test, was the referee....."On Saturday, I passed the skating part," Cody said. "If I pass the written exam, I can work as a referee on the national level." He'll get the results in a few days...

AAA Mustangs defenseman Steve Notvotny was in the bleachers, watching his younger brother Johnny skate for Team Las Vegas....Derek Pacuk not only skated well, but was super-smart on the ice for the Mustangs....

There was an amazingly large crowd on hand.....Team Las Vegas skaters included Chris Crowley, Barry Baker and Robert Sutherland (a former Titans 16s roller player). Team Las Vegas' goalie was Josh Cardozi who worked hard and made some nice stops....

Score by periods:

Team Las Vegas midget A (2-1) 1 1 0 - 2
L.V. Mustangs midget A (4-4) 2 2 0 - 4

Mustangs- Detrimetrus Amore
Mustangs- Kurt Long (Jason Allen)

Las Vegas vs. El Segundo Regents, As...
14-1-1 MUSTANGS RETURN
TO ACTION OCT. 20-21!!!!

Las Vegas -- Rob Pallin's Mustangs car caravan has been there before: Down two-lane I-15 South, across the California border, gawk at the big Thermometer in Baker, re-gas in Barstow, check to see if the earth is shaking and then it's off to Southern California ice rinks.

The AAA 14-1-1 Mustangs 17-and-under ice team will be at two rinks Saturday and Sunday Oct. 20-21. First, Las Vegas is scheduled for a 2:30 pm Saturday game in Ontario, then it's off to the super-cold Riverside rink for three more games.

As it looks right now, Las Vegas will take on the Ontario Senators, the El Segundo Regents, Los Angeles Jr. Kings minor team and the Ventura Mariners.

Of the four, there will be much interest in the game vs. El Segundo. The Regents have skated particuarly well against the San Jose Jr. Sharks who are regarded as the #1 Tier II team in the West.

Here are the results of the San Jose vs. El Segundo games so far this season:

San Jose Jr. Sharks 3, El Segundo Regents 1
San Jose Jr. Sharks 3, El Segundo Regents 2
El Segundo Regents 4, San Jose Jr. Sharks 1

Dan Shiode, the Mustangs official stat-keeper, is still working on official numbers although it looks like Josh Jasek (17, 14) and Eddie Samuels (7, 12) are among the point leaders right now. Those two skaters joined Rob Pallin's Mustangs team this past summer.

The Mustangs are also getting exceptional firepower from two defensemen, Eddie Del Grosso and T.J. Craig. Those two racked up points during the recent five-game set in Kearns, Utah.

We'll have a complete look at the Mustangs weekend schedule, with exact faceoff times, later this week. We will also have a lineup card and a breakdown on our three lines.

Scoring Corrections,Lots of Revises, Plus....
NEXT TARGET FOR AAA MUSTANGS:
EL SEGUNDO REGENTS

After going 4-0-1 this weekend, coach Rob Pallin is working on a four-game series which will include the red hot El Segundo Regents of Southern California.

The 14-1-1 AAA Las Vegas Mustangs are going to take off this weekend, then head for Riverside, Calif. to take on what Pallin calls "top competition" Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20-21.

For sure, Pallin wants the schedule to include the El Segundo Regents 17-and-under ice team which just upset the San Jose Jr. Sharks, 4-2.

"We want to play El Segundo and we want to play top Tier teams," Pallin said. "Then, we're off to Arvada (Colorado) the following weekend."

Also, we have some team and individual scoring revises from this weekend:

//That was Adam Naglich, not J.C. Caron, who scored against the Phoenix Firebirds in that wild 1-1 tie on Saturday night. It was a very dramatic goal, with Naglich scoring with 10:56 left in the game.

//Eddie Samuels actually had seven assists in the five game series.

//Pallin says he plans to work on the Mustangs power play throughout workouts scheduled this coming week.

//A wrong score was posted at the Olympic Oval. Actually, the L.A. Jr. Kings minors beat the San Diego Jr. Gulls, 4-3.

//Two more late scores just came in:
San Jose Jr. Sharks 9, L.A. Jr. Kings minors 2
Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs 5, San Diego Jr. Gulls 3

Also, here is the game summary from Sunday in Kearns, Utah:

LAS VEGAS MUSTANGS 1 2 0 - 3
UTAH STARS 1 0 0 - 1

LV- Eddie Del Grosso
LV- Josh Jasek (Eddie Samuels)
LV- T.J. Craig (Eddie Samuels)

Also, these scores were just sent in:

Spike Neely To the Rescue, As...
.JOSH JASEK SLAMS IN 17TH GOAL,
14-1-1 MUSTANGS OUT-BATTLE UTAH !!!!

Kearns, Utah -- On Sunday, Mustangs center Josh Jasek pressed forward and took a high-speed cruise into a faraway corner and all of sudden, he had a blowout.

He went looking for his left steel blade......

"I looked down and I didn't have a blade on one of my skates," he said. "So I went to the bench, asked Spike Neely (injured, with a broken right thumb) what was his skate size......He said '10', which is my size and he even had his skates in the locker room."

Jasek re-laced, returned to the ice, got posted on the left side of the net, got a laser-like pass from Eddie Samuels and in the net went goal #17 of the season.

Which is what the AAA Las Vegas Mustangs needed, because most of the other Mustangs were locked in combat.

Rob Pallin's Mustangs 3, Utah Stars 1, and the Stars went down over-heated to put it mildly. The game ended with Mustang center Justin Grossman and a Utah skater chest to chest, glove to glove.

The skaters call it "mixing it up" and according to Eddie Samuels every team needs a few.

"That's why I like Justin Grossman, Sean Darby, Steve Novotny on our side," Eddie said. "They like to get in there, mix it up when needed."

The Mustangs got some more firepower, from long range, from defensemen Eddie Del Grosso and T.J. Craig who each scored.  Totalled, those two knocked in five goals this weekend which is a pretty high total coming out of the Mustangs defense considering how many Mustang snipers are prowling out there on the ice.

Las Vegas went 4-0-1 here to open play in the Southwest Youth Hockey League. Cody Fulwiler went 3-0-1 and Paul Lowden was 1-0 in the net.

Here's how the 14-1-1 Mustangs, unbeaten in a club-record 12 straight, did it:

5-1 over the San Diego Jr. Gulls
3-2 over the L.A. Jr. Kings minors
7-1 over the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs
1-1 vs. the Phoenix Firebirds
3-1 over the Utah Stars

Mustangs unofficial scoring leaders (we got all the goals, but
we're probably short a few assists) for the 5-game series:

7- Josh Jasek 3/4 -- 17/14 for season
6- Eddie Samuels 0/7
5- Eddie Del Grosso 3/2
5- JC Caron 2/3
4- Adam Naglich 3/1
3- T.J. Craig 2/1
3- Travis Roseberry 2/1
2- Justin Grossman 1/1

1- Sean Fox 1/0, Spike Neely 1/0, Mike Sullivan 1/0, Sean Darby 0/1 and Josh Shiode 0/1

ICE NOTEBOOK -- Against Utah Eddie Samuels picked off a pass, skated to the attacking blue line, got inside of it and then passed to Josh who was posted on the left side of the net...."It was a pretty quick play," Eddie said. "Josh has real quick hands, which makes it all work."..... Del Grosso, Jasek and Craig scored in that order.... Lots of great hockey talk in GM Bob Roseberry's van during the return trip on I-15 South.....

Phoenix Firebirds, 2-0-3 here, tied the San Jose Jr. Sharks, 3-3 on Sunday morning.....

That terrific Las Vegas Mustangs squirt team won again, beating the Phoenix Firebirds, 5-1......Also, Evan Zucker of Las Vegas dealt two assists as the AAA Pikes Peak Tigers bantam team beat New Mexico midget A, 9-1...

ADAM NAGLICH POURS IN 3 BIG GOALS
AAA MUSTANGS CRUSH LONG BEACH, 7-1;
RALLY TO TIE PHOENIX FIREBIRDS 1-1 !!!!

Kearns, Utah -- It was Super Saturday for Rob Pallin's AAA Las Vegas Mustangs. First, Adam Naglich popped in three goals in a stunning 7-1 victory over the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs. Then, J.C. Caron scored a dramatic third period goal to rescue the Mustangs who tied the hard skating Phoenix Firebirds, 1-1.

All of this lifted Las Vegas' record to 13-1-1, kept the unbeaten streak alive at a club record 11 in a row and got the team frenzied for the Sunday getaway game against the rugged Utah Stars 17-and-under midget ice team.

"We're playing solid hockey," Pallin said, at a midnight team dinner at Applebee's in Kearns. "Cody Fulwiler has been solid in the net, the defense has held up and I'm pretty happy. There are certain areas where we really need to improve, but all coaches look for that in their teams."

The only bad news was an injury to left winger Spike Neely, who fractured a thumb during the win over Long Beach. He went for x-rays, the break was discovered and the skater who won the "all heart" award last winter will probably be out for about two weeks.

As a result, Pallin reworked the lines for the Phoenix game.

But first, the sweet six-goal win over Long Beach:

LAS VEGAS 7, LONG BEACH JR. ICE DOGS 1
//Adam Naglich scores the first goal on a breakaway, then nails two more for a total of three. Josh Jasek (15th), Travis Roseberry (6th), Sean Darby (3rd) and T.J. Craig (3rd) also score for the Mustangs who are now 2-1 vs. the Ice Dogs this season. Eddie Samuels gets two assists, his 9th and 10th of the season. Las Vegas had more shots, 35-24. Long Beach is the only team to beat the Mustangs (4-3 at the Hockeyfest in Lakewood, Calif.). Las Vegas got revenge recently, winning 2-1 when JC Caron scored with 0:04 left but this six-goal victory is the biggest ever in the series between the two teams.

LAS VEGAS 1, PHOENIX FIREBIRDS 1
//Phoenix scores first in the opening period, then Caron gets the tying rebound goal with 10:56 left in the third. Josh Jasek, who cracked the initial shot, gets the assist. It's another great effort for Cody Fulwiler who is now 10-1-1 in the net. "Phoenix put a neutral zone trap in and we had some problems getting through," said Cody. "That accounts for such low shot numbers too. A lot of the game was played at center ice." Again, Las Vegas had more shots, 21-12.

With Neely out, here's how Pallin re-did his lines:

Gold Line -
LW-Sean Darby 3/6
C-Travis Roseberry 6/10
RW-Eddie Samuels 7/10

Red Line
LW-Adam Naglich 6/12
C-Josh Jasek 16/14
RW-JC Caron 8/10

Blue Line
LW-Sean Fox 1/2
C-Justin Grossman 6/7
RW-Mike Sullivan 9/2

Also: Spike Neely 9/3

It looks like the lines will stay that way until Neely returns.

Next up is the Utah Stars. Faceoff is set for Sunday, 9:30 a.m.

"Scrappy team with two solid Utah skaters we have to watch out for," Pallin said. "They had one big win here (6-1 over Long Beach) but San Jose Jr. Sharks really put it to them, 6-3, today. We're tired, having played four times in two days, but we should be OK for Sunday. Cody goes back in the net and he's been solid the last two days."

ICE NOTEBOOK -- Yes, that was the Belgium speed skating team on the Olympic Oval ice track doing time trials when the Mustangs and the Jr. Ice Dogs lined up at center ice to start their game today.......

Adam Naglich's 3 goals here gives him six for the season....Josh Jasek nails his 16th goal........Winger Eddie Samuels (7 goals, 10 assists for season) has five assists here...."It's a funny game," he said. "I haven't had a good shot opportunity the last two games.".......

Here's some other 17-and-under midget ice scores posted here:

Phoenix Firebirds 3, Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs 1
//Firebirds fire in a long empty-net goal to clinch it....
San Jose Jr. Sharks 6, Utah Stars 3
//San Jose 3-0 here......
San Diego Jr. Gulls 4, L.A. Jr. Kings minors 3
//Ouch....another stunning loss for Jr. Kings.....
San Diego Jr. Gulls 6, Utah Stars 1
//Utah beginning to wear down.....

Mustangs parents are hoping to gas up the vans and be on I-15 South by noon Sunday......

MEANWHILE, BACK HOME -- The ice is down at the Santa Fe Ice Arena. Buddy Caron, J.C.'s father, is working hard to re-do the rink boards with new dasher advertising.....New blue kick boards are also going in too, we're told.....New ice is hopefully ready for Monday eve....

Wow -- Micah Sanford continues to pour in the goals. He had one in Chilliwack's wild 6-6 OT tie with the Burnaby Bulldogs on Friday eve, then scored two more in a 5-1 win over the Langley Hornets on Saturday. That gives Sanford 10 goals for the 7-1-1 Chilliwack Chiefs Junior A team in the BCHL.....

Eddie Del Grosso, Mike Sullivan and J.C. Caron Score, As....
MUSTANGS BEAT L.A. JR. KINGS 3-2!!!!

Kearns, Utah -- It doesn't happen often, a Las Vegas team putting it to the L.A. Jr. Kings.

"Two years ago, we took a bantam team into Los Angeles, won by maybe 2-1," said assistant Mustangs coach Mike Sullivan. "That was the last one I remember......"

Late Friday night, Rob Pallin's AAA Las Vegas Mustangs scratched out two early goals, then held on to outwork the Los Angeles Jr. Kings minors 17-and-under ice team in a 3-2 thriller Friday night at the Olympic Oval.

It was the Mustangs second straight win here, which shouldn't be taken lightly. Already, the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs have been beaten twice and the tough, hard-skating AAA Phoenix Firebirds are fighting for their lives every time they get onto the ice.

It was also a club-record 9th straight win for Las Vegas, now 12-1overall and about to face the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs and the Phoenix Firebirds in this rink on Saturday. And all of a sudden the Mustangs getaway game against the Utah Stars looks like a rough one.

All the Utah team did was rip Long Beach, 6-1, and then fight and claw all the way before going down in flames to Phoenix, 3-2.

League games are never easy, as these high-powered programs are finding out. A year ago, the L.A. Jr. Kings minors team won the regular-season title in the Southwest Youth Hockey League, going 10-3-3.

Here, the L.A. Jr. Kings this weekend are 0-1-1.

Here's how the Mustangs did it: Eddie Del Grosso, Las Vegas' leading scorer from the 'D,' popped in the first goal; red line winger Mike Sullivan scored with 0:02 left in the first period and winger J.C. Caron knocked in the game-breaker at the 13:46 mark of the second period.

Las Vegas led 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, 3-2.

The Mustangs did have more shots, 42-20, and Paul Lowden got the big win in the net. Lowden is now 3-0 as a Mustang goalie.

Before we give the Mustangs summaries, here are some scores we've able to confirm. All of these games were played today at the Olympic Oval:

Sean Fox Blasts 1st Goal of Season, As....
MUSTANGS ROUGH UP SAN DIEGO, 5-1!!!!!

Kearns, Utah -- Rob Pallin's AAA Las Vegas Mustangs won their 8th in a row, roughing up the San Diego Jr. Gulls, 5-1, at the Olympic Oval late Friday afternoon.

And it took some extra special work to do it.

The Mustangs play home games on a 200 x 85' sheet of ice at the Santa Fe Ice Arena. The Olympic Oval is 200 x 100' and at least in the first half of the game, posed some positional problems for the 11-1 17-and-under Mustangs ice team.

"That's a lot of extra width which we had to deal with," said Mustangs coach Rob Pallin.

The Las Vegas win opened play in the AAA Southwest Youth Hockey League. The Mustangs have four more games to go this weekend, including a 9:00 pm Friday faceoff against the Los Angeles Jr. Kings minors team.

Against San Diego, Mustangs goal scorers included Justin Grossman (his 6th, long slap shot), Josh Jasek (his 14th), Travis Roseberry (his 5th), Sean Fox (his first, on a blistering shot from outside right circle) and Spike Neely (his 9th, from Travis Roseberry and Eddie Samuels). Eddie S (7/7 for season) had two assists in the game.

Las Vegas had more shots, 35-15. The win went to goalie Cody Fulwiler, now 9-1 for the season.

Looks Like Minnesota Christmas Trip Is Off, So......
AAA MUSTANGS LOOKING FOR CANADIAN ROAD TRIP!!!!

Rob Pallin's AAA Las Vegas Mustangs schedule-makers will be working OT this weekend. The 10-1 Mustangs learned today they will not be permitted to play in the Hilltopper Tournament in Minnesota during Christmas week. Mustangs GM Bob Roseberry said apparently only high school varsity teams will be allowed to compete.

The 17-and-under Mustangs were scheduled to pack their gear and head for McCarron Airport on Christmas night and head for snowy Duluth, Minn.

Instead, Roseberry has turned his sights towards the Pacific Northwest, specifically the greater B.C. area where there are many 17-and-under midget AA/AAA teams such as the Burnaby Winter Club, Vancouver Thunderbirds, Port Coquitlam Pirates, Surrey Eagles and the red and white of Ridge Meadows.

"Ideally, we would like to get into a tournament situation," said Roseberry, while driving his hockey van to Kearns, Utah on Friday. "It's a matter of hitting the internet and going through team web pages."

The AAA Mustangs already have an ambitious schedule, including a road trip to the Rockies to take on #1 rated Arvada, Colorado, on Saturday, Oct. 27.

But it looks like Las Vegas head coach Rob Pallin has his sights on even bigger games for his 10-1 team.

ICE NOTEBOOK -- On Saturday, AA Pikes Peak Jr. Tigers are at AA Arvada. It's the season-opener for the Jr. Tigers.....After five games, former AAA Vail star center Scott Tittle has two goals, two assists for the 3-1-1 AAA Pikes Peak Miners.....Those are good numbers for a first-year skater on this level.....Eddie Samuels' former AAA Vail teammate, Donny Rose, said to be playing well for AAA Littleton Hawks.....Rose is a big, strong defensemen.....

Micah Sanford's Chilliwack Chiefs have a nice weekend: Burnaby's Junior A team comes in on Friday, then the Chiefs head for Langley.....

We're in tropical Corpus Christi, Texas this week, so everyone please email with all scores and game summaries.....

MICAH IS ON FIRE!!!!
7 GAMES, 7 GOALS, 5 ASSISTS!!!!
SANFORD NAMED BCHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK!!!!

Chilliwack, B.C. -- Micah Sanford, our all-time roller and ice score king from Las Vegas, exploded for the Chilliwack Chiefs Junior A team the last three games. He fired in five goals, three assists in three starts and was named the BCHL's Player of the Week.

It is the highest honor to date for any Las Vegas skater. Sanford grew up at the Crystal Palace roller rink on Rancho, eventually turned to ice and is in his second season with the Chiefs.

Sanford, 19, scored three goals and dealt two assists in Chilliwack's 8-3 win over Prince George last Friday and the next night fired in two more goals, added an assist in an 8-7 OT win over Quesnel.

After seven games, Sanford has seven goals, five assists for 12 points.

Sanford is regarded as one of the all-time playmakers and top scorers from Las Vegas, becoming a force in roller and ice as a young teenager.

Here's the story behind the story.......

MICAH SANFORD
LAS VEGAS
19 YEARS OLD
6'2 200 LBS.

At age 14-15
Plays a starring playmaker role on a Rolling Thunder travel team which includes the greatest, most thrilling Las Vegas roller lineup of all-time: Micah Sanford, Patrick Stevenson, Leroy Garcia and Freddie Young. Micah leads the Thunder to many gold and silver medals throughout the country.

At age 15-16
Continues roller with the Tour Rebels, but also begins skating for the Las Vegas Mustangs midget A team at the Santa Fe Ice Arena.

At age 16-17
Signs up and skates for the Las Vegas Blackjacks Junior B team at the Sahara ice rink.

At age 17-18
Joins AAA Vail's 17-and-under midget team in the Rockies and works his way to the first line with all-time team scorer Ted O'Leary. Sanford skates at an extremely high level on a powerful touring AAA midget ice team. O'Leary, after the season, signs with Cedar Rapids Rough Riders. Sanford heads for Canada, as....

At age 18-19
Micah signs with the Chilliwack Chiefs Junior A team, the first Las Vegas skater to reach this level. Scores 13 goals, adds nine assists. Scores two more goals during the playoffs.

At age 19-20
Works out with our AAA Las Vegas Mustangs 17-and-under skaters during the summer; does midnight laps at high speed the Santa Fe Ice Arena; goes to the six-week Peter Twist skating school which includes a brutal run up and down the impossible 'Hell Mountain' while working with NHL stars in Vancouver. At Chilliwack, all of the incredible work and determination pays off: Micah explodes for seven goals, five assists in his first seven games.

ICE NOTEBOOK -- Micah is the all-time scorer in house roller action at Crystal Palace on Rancho. When he used to skate on Sunday nights, younger skaters stayed and peered over the rink boards to watch his dazzling playmaking.....When Micah skated at AAA Vail, he was kind enough to look after younger Las Vegas skaters Travis Roseberry, T.J. Craig and Eddie Samuels who were with the AAA Vail 14-and-under bantam team.....This past summer, Micah put his old team together and played in scrimmage roller games against the Las Vegas Titans 16s, helping prepare them for the NARCH Nationals..... More good news: His Chilliwack Chiefs are off to a 6-1 start....

ON OCT. 27, PLUS THERE'S MORE!!!
BIG CHANGES BREWING FOR AAA MUSTANGS!!!!

Las Vegas -- Rob Pallin's 10-1 AAA Las Vegas Mustangs have an entirely new schedule this coming weekend. The Provo Golden Eagles pulled their team from weekend action in the Southwest Youth Hockey League, so the league revised Oct. 5 to 7 schedules for its AAA 17-and-under midget ice teams.

Here's the new Mustangs schedule for the Olympic Oval in Kearns, Utah (All start times are local time....)

Southwest Youth Hockey League
17-and-under ice

Friday, Oct. 5

9:00 pm -- vs. Los Angeles Jr. Kings minors

Saturday, Oct. 6
3:00 pm -- vs. Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs
9:00 pm -- vs. Phoenix Firebirds

Sunday, Oct. 7
9:30 am -- vs. Utah Stars

There are three top teams -- L.A. Jr. Kings, Long Beach and Phoenix -- in the mix plus there's more scheduling news. Pallin, with GM Bob Roseberry, just booked a game vs. Arvada, Colorado, which is the #1 AA midget ice team in the country according to Midgetaa.com.

The Mustangs, who will play in the Tier II regionals at Valencia in March, are rated #8 by Midgetaa.com.

Here's the Las Vegas Mustangs schedule for the Rockies:

Friday, Oct. 26
Rockies team to be announced.

Saturday, Oct. 27
1:00 pm -- at #1 rated AA Arvada, Colorado
5:00 pm -- at AAA Littleton Hawks

"We want to take on top teams," Pallin said. "That's the only way we can keep improving."

The Mustangs have a Wednesday eve practice (8:45 p.m.) on home ice at the Santa Fe Ice Arena, then the skaters begin heading to Utah on Thursday.

ICE NOTEBOOK -- AAA San Diego Jr. Gulls are off to an 8-0-2 start and next head to Kamloops, B.C. for a series of games....Geoff Kemper had a goal and an assist and former AAA Vail skater Dane Ludolph had two goals in that 6-4 win over the AAA California Wave....Evan Zucker (5 goals, 4 assists, +16 in nine starts) of Las Vegas is off to a very strong start for the AAA Pikes Peak Tigers 14-and-under bantam team which beat the Pueblo midget A, 8-1, last week....Evan's team takes on the New Mexico midget A team this weekend....

We'll try to post AAA Mustangs scores as quickly as possible this weekend, so keep wired into edsamuels.com....

Our Car Caravan Will Soon Gas Up, Head For I-15 North, As....
AAA MUSTANGS WILL FACE TRUE CHALLENGE IN UTAH!!!!!

Las Vegas -- Drink lots of fresh water, take your vitamins, eat homecooked pasta, easy on the red sauce.

Oh, and no more late-night drive-thrus at the Golden Arches.

Coach Rob Pallin says he wants to keep his skaters healthy and fit as the cough and flu season arrives for the 10-1 AAA Las Vegas Mustangs 17-and-under ice team which is off to its best start ever.

"Eat good food and eat a lot of it," Pallin told his younger skaters. "We're skating hard and you'll need it to maintain weight."

Pallin is mostly concerned about five games in three days the Mustangs are facing Oct. 5 to 7 in Kearns, Utah.

Las Vegas opens its AAA play in the Southwest Youth Hockey League and takes on the Provo Golden Eagles, Utah Stars, AA Los Angeles Jr. Kings, San Diego Jr. Gulls and the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs at the Olympic Oval.

Las Vegas will be a big favorite over the Utah Stars and the San Diego Jr. Gulls (it's their AA team, not the AAA) but Pallin has concerns with the Golden Eagles (said to be stronger than last year), L.A. Jr. Kings minors and the Jr. Ice Dogs. This will be our first meeting in two seaons with the Golden Eagles and the Jr. Kings. Here's how the Mustangs have done against the other three teams:

Las Vegas Mustangs vs. Utah Stars
2000
9-1 over Utah Stars at Lakewood
7-0 over Utah Stars at San Jose
9-0 over Utah Stars at Las Vegas Sport Park

Las Vegas Mustangs vs. San Diego Jr. Gulls
2000
2-1 over San Diego Jr. Gulls at Santa Fe
5-1 over San Diego Jr. Gulls at Santa Fe
3-1 over San Diego Jr. Gulls at Santa Fe

Las Vegas Mustangs vs. Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs
2000
3-4 to Long Beach at Las Vegas Sport Park
2-1 over Long Beach at Mountainview
3-5 to Long Beach at Tier II regionals at Tri-Cities, Washington
2001
3-4 to Long Beach at Hockeyfest, Lakewood
2-1 over Long Beach at Fall Classic at Santa Fe Ice Arena

MUSTANGS OUT-SHOOTING ALL OPPONENTS SO FAR!

After 11 games, Mustangs are averaging 37.0 shots and allowing just 16.2 shots a game. Mustangs have out-shot every team and against Beach City, it was 20-0 in the second period and against Cupertino, it was 23-2 in the first period.

The best game: 49-7 over the Beach City Lightning in the season opener.....The closest: 27-24 over the Ventura Mariners at our Fall Classic at the Santa Fe Ice Arena....

So who is taking all of these shots? Here are the Mustang shot leaders after 11 games:

46-Josh Jasek
33-Adam Naglich
32-Spike Neely
28-Mike Sullivan
27-Eddie Del Grosso
27-Eddie Samuels
26-Justin Grossman
25-JC Caron
25-Travis Roseberry
25-Sean Fox
21-Steve Novotny
14-Josh Shiode
14-T.J. Craig
12-Sean Darby
11-Chris Anderson
9- Justin Johnson (4 games)

ICE NOTEBOOK -- After just a few weeks Buddy Caron, J.C.'s father and our new ice rink supervisor, has mastered our propane-fired Zamboni. The Santa Fe ice is better than ever....Buddy says twirling figure skaters dig into the ice as well as any Mustang defenseman, including 6' 4 1/2" 200 lb. Chris Anderson......"Changed a few things, including the big rubber blade on the backup Zamboni," said Buddy, who speaks of hot water tanks, cold water washes and ice cuts......

My Blue Line turnover: Accidently left out Eddie Del Grosso's +15 on our plus/minus chart the other day.....Eddie is also our leading scorer from the defense....

Our stat guru Dan Shiode cannot make it to Utah, so the big books get turned over to Neal Grossman and Patti Del Grosso for the weekend....

We have the revised Mustangs game schedule posted on edsamuels.com.....just go to front page, look for schedules button on upper left area.....Also, go to the links page and check our Pete Ricciardo's Mustangs A page....He has a nice rundown on former Mustangs skaters.....

Josh Jasek's AAA Mustangs web page now includes terrific game
photos and more importantly, the correct time of every practice.....Josh's page is getting an extraordinary number of hits, we're told....We have a link to it on edsamuels.com......

Mustangs car carvan will head out Thursday morning, winding on I-15 North....There'll be a cluster of neat little Utah towns to explore on the way......Bob Roseberry's "hockey van" will be loaded Mustangs and lots of with gear.....

On AOL weather map, snowclouds forming over Duluth, Minn. -- and we don't arrive until Christmas week!......

San Jose Jr. Sharks, rated #1 in our Top 10 West, will also be
in
Utah this weekend...They have some SWYHL games too, including one with the Long Beach Jr. Ice Dogs....San Jose beat Long Beach 8-1 earlier this year, but Jr. Ice Dogs contend not all of their soldiers were on the ice that game...

We sent out a flash midget score on Saturday: AAA San Diego Jr. Gulls 6, AAA California Wave 4.......Geoff Kemper scores for the Jr. Gulls..... AA San Jose Jr. Sharks visit AAA Jr. Gulls third weekend in October... Jr. Sharks are also on the home schedule of the AAA Pikes Peak Miners in Colorado Springs....

If you want to get on our Flash Score emails, just let me know...

To 'Can't Find it:' To get to Midgetaa.com, you must first go to Midgetaaa.com, hit the U.S. Hockey News button, then scroll down to bottom of that page.....That's where you will see the area for Midgetaa.com.....

That was a nice note posted on edsamuels.com from Scott Tittle, Eddie's former teammate from the AAA Vail bantams.....Scott (45 goals) and Eddie (31 goals) were Jamie O'Leary's 1-2 scoring punch last winter for the blueshirts in Colorado......Tittle is now skating for the AAA Pikes Peak Miners.....Tanar Nobles, a very rugged hard-hitting bantam winger at AAA Vail last winter, is now skating for AAA Colorado Outlaws midget team which skates out of the Hyland Hills ice rink in Denver.....Tanar's Dad, Bill, was the outstanding road equipment manager for the Vail team......

If anyone has Ed Lewis' new email address, please contact me.....He and son Eddie, former Rolling Thunder and Tour Rebel roller star here in Las Vegas, are always in touch but their email is not working......
